Roux Campus Portland

PUBLIC BENEFITS
of the Roux Campus

ACCESSIBLE OPEN SPACE
The center of the Roux Campus will be public open space consisting of a mix of saltwater meadow and lawn. Over 1,000 feet of waterfront with public access will be restored to more natural contours.

EAST DEERING
ECONOMIC
ACTIVITY
East Deering's restaurants, stores, bars, and retail shops will be patronized by members of the Roux Campus community, workers, and residents, and the site will become a vital, easily accessible extension of the neighborhood.

TAX BENEFITS
For-profit development on the site will generate property taxes for the city of Portland and direct and indirect employees will pay taxes to many communities in greater Portland and to the State of Maine.

WATERFRONT ACCESS
The Roux Campus waterfront will be open to the public and IDEALS hopes to create a trail linking to the Back Cove, Eastern Promenade, and mid-town trails for commuting and public enjoyment. Trails, picnic spots and a kayak/paddleboard area will enable the public to share this prized asset.

EDUCATION
OPPORTUNITIES
The Roux Institute at Northeastern University offers graduate students and industry partner employees the education, experience, and training needed for the high-tech, high-growth fields that provide the path to economic prosperity and quality of life.

RETAIL
The site will support a small hotel, a family-size grocery store, coffee shops, bars, and local retail which would serve the campus, the neighborhood, and the city.

STUDENT AND
FACULTY HOUSING
Recognizing the shortage of housing in Greater Portland, the Roux Campus will include at least 175 and as many as 500 units of housing to accommodate students and faculty of the Roux Institute at Northeastern University and potentially others as availability allows.

CHILDCARE
The site will host a childcare facility with priority for children of those living, working, and studying on the site. Excess capacity will be available to others.

INNOVATION
SPACE
Both the bean manufacturing building repurposed as a start-up incubator and the Roux Institute at Northeastern University building itself will be designed to create breakthrough moments and transform innovation into successful thriving businesses.

JOB CREATION
The Roux Campus, as an innovation and education hub, will stimulate new economic activity across Portland.

STORM AND FLOOD PROTECTION
Coastal restoration will reduce the impacts of flooding in the area. All new structures will be constructed well above any anticipated storm surge limits.

SUSTAINABILITY
We have ambitious goals for sustainability and resiliency of all structures to be placed on the site and will provide updates on plans as they are developed.
